| Some thoughts on informal education |
| While tremendous progress is
made on the technological front, we continue to remain quarrelsome people,
with little or no help from formal education to resolve issues that plague
us in our own lifetime and beyond. What is the concern? Many, many issues remain unresolved and are carried over from generation to generation. The formal education brings out specialists who work in narrow confines as though issues in different domains are unrelated. What is absent from formal education? Issues that confront people in their daily life are not made known to the students – they are not part of the curriculum. What to do? Prepare a list of issues Categorize them Write a small note on each of them in a completely factual manner absolutely without taking sides Allow discussion among peer age groups to let the issue unfold through questioning and research What are the issues? Competition Rivalry Nationalism Religious bigotry Ideologies Social structures Population Resource consumption Pollution Wars Terrorism What are the issue categories?
